Audit of Historical Photographic Collections for County Donegal

Launch of Audit of Historical Photographic Collections

Cllr. Cora Harvey (Mayor of County Donegal) & Rónán McConnell at the launch of the audit and database of historical photographic collections for County Donegal at the Regional Cultural Centre in Letterkenny (May 2011).

An audit of historical photographic collections for County Donegal was commissioned in 2010 by the County Donegal Heritage Forum, the Donegal County Archives and the County Donegal Heritage Office as part of the implementation of the County Donegal Heritage Plan. The audit of historical photographic collections in public care identified those photographic collections that contained images from County Donegal and established a searchable database that gives people an overview of the Donegal places and themes addressed in those collections.

Included in the audit/database are collections such as the Eason and Lawrence collections (National Photographic Archive, Dublin); the R.J. Welch, Hogg and Green collections (Ulster Folk & Transport Museum, Cultra, County Down); the Cooper collection (Public Records Office of Northern Ireland, Belfast); the Bigger-McDonald collection (Central Library, Derry); the Donegal County Museum postcard collection and the Donegal County Archives’ collections. There are over 3,250 documented images of County Donegal in these collections.

The database of historical photographic collections for County Donegal can be accessed in the County Archives, Lifford; the County Museum, Letterkenny and the Central Library, Letterkenny. A guide to historical photographic collections for County Donegal has been compiled by Rónán McConnell. Copies of the guide are available free-of-charge from the County Donegal Heritage Office, Cultural Services, Donegal County Council on (074) 917 2576 or by e-mail at [email protected].
